    What is Expert Crafting?

Expert crafting removes the safety rails from FFXIV crafting. No more macros that work every time. No more “I’ll just hit repeat.” Instead: real decisions. Real consequences. Real skill.

Expert crafting is the advanced system for crafters level 90+ in FFXIV. It removes the illusion that crafting is solved: recipes resist macro automation and reward understanding over memorization. Each craft presents dynamic conditions that change how you approach the recipe, making no two crafts identical.

The core mechanic: Five rotating conditions (Centered, Sturdy, Pliant, Malleable, Primed) appear randomly throughout your craft. Each condition offers a unique advantage. Your job is to recognize when each appears and decide whether to use it or save CP for something better.

This creates genuine variance in crafting. Same recipe, same materials, different outcome—depending on your decisions.

    Who Should Try Expert Crafting?

Expert crafting is for crafters who want:

    • A real challenge — Macros won’t solve everything. You have to engage.
    • Skill expression — Your decisions directly impact success and quality.
    • Bragging rights — High crafting scores in expert recipes prove you understand the system.
    • Better rewards — Higher scores yield better mats, gil, and reputation gains.

You don’t need to be a veteran crafter. You just need patience and willingness to learn from failures.

    Prerequisites: What You Actually Need

Before attempting expert crafting, verify you have:

    • Crafting job level 90 — This is mandatory. You cannot access expert recipes below 90.
    • Master craftsperson quest completed — Each crafting job (Carpenter, Blacksmith, Alchemist, etc.) has a corresponding NPC. Complete their master craftsperson quest to unlock expert recipes.
    • Minimum gear iLvl 560 — You need adequate gear to meet the stats required for expert recipes. Raid gear or crafted gear at minimum.
    • Basic material preparation — Expert recipes require materials. You’ll need time to farm or purchase them before attempting your first expert craft.

The good news: you don’t need perfect optimization to start. You just need the basics.

How to Get Started in 5 Minutes

    1. Find your master craftsperson NPC — Each crafting job has one. For Carpenter, it’s [Item] in Crystarium. Check the teleport board for your discipline.

    2. Accept the initial quest — The quest is usually called [Item] or similar. Acceptance is instant.

    3. Complete your first recipe — Your first expert recipe is provided with materials. Don’t stress about perfect execution. Just try it.

    4. Earn your first score — After completing a recipe (success or failure), you receive a crafting score. This is how you progress and unlock harder recipes.

    5. Learn from the attempt — Even if you failed, you learned something about timing, CP management, or condition windows. Build on that next attempt.

    Key Concepts: The Quick Version

Here’s what makes expert crafting different from regular crafting:

Conditions — Random status effects that appear during crafts. Five types appear randomly: [Item], [Item], [Item], [Item], and [Item]. You must decide whether to use each condition or wait for a better opportunity. See the Conditions & Mechanics guide for deep dive.

Phases — Your craft is divided into durability segments. Early phases are for setup, mid-game is for exploiting conditions, and the end is about closing without disaster.

Crafting Score — A numerical rating for each craft based on your execution: speed, quality, efficiency. Higher scores unlock harder recipes and better rewards.

CP and Durability — Your two limiting resources. CP powers your actions. Durability limits how many actions you can take. Balance them carefully.
